First Visit to Rawlings

I just returned from visiting Rawlings and her doting parents last night.  I was only away for three days, but it was three days of bliss.  I sat, as I said I would, on the couch, holding my newest grandchild, and watched her face as she slept and listened to her little baby grunts and gurgles.

Once in a great while I let her parents have a moment with her....but mostly I hogged her the whole time I was there.  Her mommy did a little work while letting Rawlings sleep in her new carrier.  It worked out very well.

Her daddy headed for her the minute he got home from work.  He seemed to expect that I would relinquish her to him.  Bah.  Fathers!  What do they know?

Occasionally I  had to let them hold the little one because it is exceedingly hard to hold a baby and take a picture of that baby at the same time.  I know this for a fact.  I tried it repeatedly with less than stellar results.

Rawlings is definitely interested in the people around her.  She is also very enamoured with lights and her father's hair.

And, oh my!  How her daddy does love her.

Her mommy loves her, too.  In fact, they dote.  (As they should.)

I enjoyed both my flights, to and fro, as the weather was clear and I had lovely views of passing mountains.  Mt. St. Helens was looking most interesting.

Look What I Got for Christmas!

My eldest daughter, the one who was married in September, and her divine husband, now known as Uncle Critter, had a surprise for the whole family. Apparently J is a walking advertisement for, as she put it, high school sex education classes....You CAN get pregnant the first time as this baby was conceived on their honeymoon weekend.

They expectant parents have had some testing done already and know that the little one is a girl.

Early summer will bring the newest of our granddaughters. My heart is over flowing!

The Wedding

Here's to hoping that you, Dear Reader, enjoy happy wedding photos as much as I do. All of these photos are curtesy of my extremely talented brother-in-law, Don Whitebread. My camera was broken the day before the wedding and I have had to rely of the kindness of family members for images to share with you.

My beautiful daughters, Annie (matron-of-honor) and the bride, Jennie.

My son Don and his eldest daughter, Emma, arrive by golf cart for the ceremony.

My oh-so-handsome son Don walks me down to my seat just before the start of the wedding ceremony. (That is the bride's camera I'm carrying.)

The flower girls were lovely. Emma (6) is on the left, Alex (5) on the right.

Jen and her handsome groom with flower girl Emma.

DH walks Jen down the "aisle" at the Calistroga Ranch, the wedding venue.

Jen & Chris' cake was delicious and carried out the hydrangea flower theme of the wedding with it's one layer completely covered with hydrangea "petals."

We were treated to a five course dinner (with wine pairings, no less!) in the wine cave at Calistoga Ranch. It was the perfect place for such a celebratory meal. The food was divine.

The cake was even better.

Welcoming Chris

My darling Jen and her fabulous intended, Chris, will be married this weekend in Napa. DH, his mother and I will leave tomorrow for California for the festivities. Daughter Annie and her Chris (this is going to become confusing, I'm afraid!) will arrive on Friday with their two children in tow. Alex will be a flower girl and will be joined by her cousin Emma, son Don's daughter. Don & Kellie and Flower Girl Emma also arrive on Friday. Friday night is the rehearsal dinner, Saturday the wedding and Sunday we all return home, with our family newly expanded and enriched. I would like to publicly declare that my children have excellent, EXCELLENT taste in spouses. Annie has her Chris, he of the wicked sense of humor, beautiful brown eyes and gentle heart. Don has Kellie, the beautiful and kind, who makes him light up whenever he mentions her name. And now Jen will have her Chris. Our newest Chris is very handsome and very smart, funny and fun, and the apple of Jen's eye. He enters into our family with a seamless and perfect fit and we know now we've always been waiting for him to join us.

DH and I are blessed with our children-in-law. They make our children happy and fulfilled. They helped bring us our beloved grandbabies. Each has made our lives richer. Now we have one more darling man to add to our family and we couldn't be happier, or prouder. He is a keeper.

Welcome, Chris! Welcome.

Alex's First Snowfall

Snow began to fall late yesterday afternoon, the last full day of Annie and Family's visit. By the time we had finished dinner, it was sticking to the lawn, the trees, the street and the sidewalks. Alex doesn't get snow in Southern California, so it was decided that she should go out to play in it, even though she was already in her 'jammies. We all had a great time! Annie and Alex made a snowman, too. I am especially fond of the broccoli eyes.

Home Again, Home Again

Today I had to say good bye to Annie, Chris, Ian and Alex and also to sunny Southern California. I won't see them again until just after Christmas. I had such a wonderful visit and can't really believe that the ten days have come and gone. Whooooosh! Now I am home again. I miss my little house when I'm gone. I miss my DH and my Orcie and even poor ol' Toes. I miss my own bed! I have been traveling so much since August that I am (almost) traveled out. That's unheard of for me to say, but it's true. I have a rotten cold (thanks, Ian!) and it feels good to be home and to know that I'll be here for a good, long while. By the time I start my traveling again, I'll be foaming at the mouth to get out of "Dodge," but for now I am more than content to just be home. It was rather a shock to go from warm and sunny in Southern California (and beautiful vistas all the way to mid Oregon were spread out below me on the flight home) to the rain and wind of Seattle and environs today. It absolutely poured as the shuttle drove into my little town of Edmonds and I got a good soaking just rushing from the shuttle van to my front door, a distance of maybe thirty feet! But inside all was cosy, warm and dry.
I found a lovely packet waiting for me from my ZNE buddy Tiffany. It was chock a block with ledger papers that she had sent as a gift. I have about sixty ideas of how to use these wonderful old papers and can't wait to get started! Thanks, Tiffany, you are most generous and it was lovely to come home to presents.
Autumn has arrived while I've been gone and it was dark so much earlier than it was just ten days ago. Most of the leaves have turned and the color was lovely to see, from both the air and from the drive home. I plugged in my branches with the little grain of rice bulbs that I found at Michael's a while back that I have arranged in Grandma's crystal vase in the dining room, and immediately it felt snug and homey. Nothing like some twinkle lights to brighten a dark, wet evening!

Phew!

Finally I have finished my 60 fatbook pages for the Portland 2009 Art & Soul fat book. I didn't think I would ever get them done and the deadline is quickly approaching. I had to get them done and this evening, while watching (well, mostly listening) to the Olympics I managed to finish them up. I will get them packed up tomorrow night and will mail them on Friday. I am so relieved. The theme for this book is Romance of the Sea and I like my cards. Simple but evocative, I think. The photo of the Tall Ship is one I took in Victoria, BC at the Tall Ship Festival in 2005. Jen came home for a very short visit last weekend and brought her friend Chris. It was a real pleasure to meet him and to have the chance to get to know him a little bit. Chris was very involved in Jen's training for the Coeur d'Alene Ironman as he also took part (and had an excellent finishing time, too, I might add!). DH and I are happy that our "girl" has found such a nice young man. It was fun to take Jen to meet her two newest nieces. Spike (Abigail) and Squeaker (Olivia) were very nice to their Aunt Jen and didn't scream or spit up or act up in any way. Their big sister Emma was very entertaining and had lots of fun playing with the gift of paper bag puppets that Aunt Jen brought to her. While Chris and Jen were here we took a stroll through the Taste of Edmonds and Chris had to try the climbing wall game. He reported that it was harder than it looked from the ground and that the hand holds were extremely greasy. Kudos to him for making it as far up the wall as he did!It was great to have Jennie home but it was much too short a visit! The two days she was here flew by at the speed of light.

GG Meets Her New Grandbabies

My mother-in-law, henceforth to be known as GG, finally got to meet her first great grandson, Ian. Six months old now and she'd never had an opportunity to see him in person nor hold him. I am happy to report that void has been filled. Last Sunday we ventured over to Don & Kellie's to visit them all, but especially so that GG could meet (and hold) The Twins. I know that GG enjoyed herself and so did I.
I am a very lucky woman as I won the Mother-in-Law stakes. I know that many women have troubled relationships with their husband's mothers, but that has never been true for me. I have adored my mother-in-law from the very first time I met her. She has treated me with nothing but love and kindness from the very start, way back in 1967. I love her with all my heart.

Beautiful but tired Kellie. (Can you imagine how exhausting it must be to handle all those middle of the night feedings---for twins? Makes me tired just thinking of it.)

And since I am now a mother-in-law I would like to state that I have also been exceedingly lucky with the choices my children have made for spouses. Chris is wonderful and Kellie is divine. I couldn't be happier with the wonderful people my children have brought into our family. I know, I know, all this sweetness is unlike me....but sometimes you just have to say it out loud for the world to hear! When you're as lucky as I have been, you better be grateful. And I am, I am.

And here is Chris, he of the kind heart, "gigantic cranium" and wacky humor. He's not too hard on the eyes, either!
